BYRON COASTAL & ICOLL CENTRE

connect - collect - share - protect

The Byron Coastal and ICOLL Centre is an environmental organisation designed to establish a hub for collecting and sharing knowledge about our unique coastal environments and ICOLLs.

The Centre took its inspiration from Byron Bay resident, scientist and writer Mary Gardner, PhD, who had a vision for the former Byron Sewage Treatment Plant site as a Sanctuary and Ecology Centre. Although the physical location for a centre was not able to be achieved, the remainder of that vision can be realised, and from that the Byron Coastal and ICOLL was created.

The Centre aims to act as a meeting ground for collaboration and information sharing among community, academia, government and industry to enhance support and care for our unique coastal places.

This initiative will be the first of its kind in Australia.

WHAT ARE ICOLLS AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Intermittently Closed and Open Lakes and Lagoons (ICOLLs) are highly important "globally rare" eco systems. New South Wales is home to 21% of global ICOLLs which sequester and store carbon dioxide, therefore acting as a natural mitigation measure to climate change.
